As 2022 marks the 25th year since Hong Kong’s establishment as a special administrative region of mainland China, it comes at a time when the city is experiencing unprecedented change. While the Covid-19 pandemic has prompted a litany of new regulatory and policy changes on its own, Hong Kong’s economic trajectory is also likely to see a shake up in the wake of March’s Chief Executive Election. All of this comes at a time when mainland China officials expect Hong Kong to contribute more meaningfully to the CCP’s 14th Five-Year Plan and integrate into the Greater Bay Area (GBA) initiative. Nationally, mainland China’s new narrative centres around achieving “common prosperity”. Taken together, this offers a new opportunity for political leaders in Hong Kong to reframe how they can best serve the public. At the same time, groups of international business leaders have called into question the viability of Hong Kong’s future economic growth while it remains largely cut off from the international community due to Covid-19 restrictions. Meanwhile, pandemic-related issues aside, debate has been magnified around the nature of Hong Kong’s progressing relationship with mainland China and what it represents to the outside world.
The South China Morning Post’s China Conference: Hong Kong returns once again to bring together business leaders, policy makers and researchers from Hong Kong, China and the international community to discuss and debate what the immediate future holds for Hong Kong, while considering Hong Kong’s long-term position within the Greater China framework. Experts will deliberate how the “one country, two systems” economic model will function in the coming 25 years, what Hong Kong’s future as a global financial centre will look like, ways in which Hong Kong can solve local issues around digitisation, housing and economic growth and the policy decisions that will contribute to Hong Kong’s integration to the GBA initiative.
